'On sites as beautiful as this, angels must have gazed'. So said Dr Livingstone (I presume) when he first stumbled across these Falls on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe in 1855.
Victoria Falls is one of the world's mightiest Falls, and one of the natural wonders of the world. Nearby is the Victoria Falls National Park and Livingstone Game Park is on the Zambia side.
The waters of Victoria Falls plunges over a precipice with a maximum drop of 335 feet (108 metres). An average of 33,000 cubic feet (935 cubic metres) falls per second, although the amount can be much more than that in flood season.
Adventurous visitors to the Falls enjoy kayaking and canoeing, white water rafting and horseback riding, or can take a guided walking safari. It is also possible to bungee jump off the 111 metres high Victoria Falls Bridge. However, to fully appreciate the scale and grandeur of the falls, an aerial view is recommended and microlight and fixed wing flights are available.
The local Kalolo Lozi people have named the falls Mosi-oa-Tunya, meaning 'The Smoke that Thunders' on account of the deafening roar and veil of mist that surrounds the falls. It has also been described as the 'greatest known curtain of falling water' However nothing can really describe the immense splendour of the Falls, so you will just have to go and see for yourself.
